One of the largest sporting events in southern Bohemia attracts hundreds of water sports enthusiasts to Český Krumlov and its surroundings every year, from pure amateurs to the international elite. The first year of the Krumlov Water Marathon took place in 2003. The organizers were inspired by the water marathon in the French Ardéche canyon, which they transferred to southern Bohemia, on the Vltava River. The Krumlov race thus became part of the world series of river marathons and, since its first year, has clearly become the most visited race of its kind in the Czech Republic.
The marathon always starts in Vyšší Brod or Rožmberk nad Vltavou and its finish is Český Krumlov, where participants navigate all the famous Krumlov weirs to the finish on the embankment by the brewery. Competitors overcome 36 or 26 river kilometers, respectively. Participation in the race is not limited and anyone can join the joint race alongside top competitors. Competitors compete on the Vltava River in kayaks, canoes, rafts, punts or paddleboards. The mandatory run through the campsite at Pískárna is also very popular with spectators, from where competitors in the student marathon also regularly start.
