Lipno Hydro Power Plant

The "South Bohemian Sea" Power Plant.

Lipno Reservoir is the largest water reservoir in the Czech Republic. It is 44 km long and the widest distance between two shores is 10 km near Černá v Pošumaví.

In the attic of the building at the Lipno Dam, there is an information center that familiarizes visitors with the history of the dam and its functioning. Every hour, films are screened in the information center and a functional model of the power plant is also available. A guided tour is available upon prior reservation. At the power station there is a free car park located at the opposite end of the dam in the Vyšší Brod direction.

The main function of the dam is flood protection, power generation and water supply for industrial enterprises. The dam was built in 1959.

Interesting numbers
The dam itself is 296 meters long and 25 meters high. The water from the dam is led to Francis turbines at a depth of 160 meters below the surface, where a large underground hall is located. A 210-meter-long tunnel leads to the underground hall. The water flowing through the turbines then flows into the Lipno II buffer reservoir through a 3.6 km long tunnel.
